The history of SNS dates back to 1817, when the first Dutch savings bank was founded as Nutsspaarbank. Today’s bank was formed out of a merger of several savings banks in the Netherlands. Currently, it operates is part of SNS REAAL financial group.

On February 1, 2013 the bank was nationalized by the Dutch government.
